#wyst blog challenge day 11 Empathy

Do you know the difference between empathy and sympathy?

I believe understanding the difference between the two will greatly impact how you and I as humans will grow and relate to others in life. Sympathy is just feeling bad for someone and take very little emotion and effort. Empathy is the ability to stand in others’ shoes, to see with their eyes, and to feel with their hearts. It is something we do pretty much spontaneously, an act of instinct rather than the product of deliberation. That is the definitions Daniel Pink gave when he explained Empathy in A Whole New Mind.

Why is this important? In order to becoming a better leader, spouse and parent you must learn the importance of empathy. If you don't than you will be that drill sergeant that cares about no one feeling and if you express any emotions you will be flipping tires at 3 am in the morning. Their reality is you just need to toughen up and deal with it. That mindset maybe true to a degree, but you are not really understanding where the others individual is coming from. You are not choosing to experience someone else world from the others person's perspective.  When you don't have a ear or heart for empathy you will find it hard to connect with others on a deeper level or for them to really want to follow or trust you.

If you are a business owner want to learn more about empathy, ask Drew Manning of Fit2Fat2Fit. Drew is a certified fitness trainer and has a passion for fitness. From a early age got into sports, like me, and become an addict for fitness. He loved his job at first and it turned out to be pretty easy. After a while he notice that he would not connect with his clients as well. Some would quit and others would become really sick after going through his workouts. So as a true professional he seen it to be his responsibility to become an expert and to do whatever it takes to have his clients trust and respect.

So he became obese! Yep a personal trainer intentionally became overweight, see for yourself the photos.(click here scroll down until you see the photos of the weeks)

He gained over 70 lbs, and you can see him on the talk show talking about it here.

His reason why I absolutely love, in his own words “ I wanted to understand more of the physical, mental, and emotional state people go through.” Here is a fitness instructor who weight 193 to 263 pounds in five months. This is what I call going to the extreme to have a level of empathy that very few care to ever experience.

This is why I love the leadership characteristic empathy because you are putting yourself in the shoes of others to understand how they feel. Therefore you can understand how to help them more efficiently! As human beings I believe we must understand how to connect more with each other. To honestly care and help others grow. That is why I am creating my brand #wyst, because for those people who are out there that want to change. To leave the fixed mindset and adapt the growth mindset. To put it into actions so that it is useful knowledge! What kind of life do you want to live.

Until tomorrow, What’s your self talk? #wyst?
